60年代リーバイス・刻印「V」の工場を追う！
リーバイス社のアルファベット刻印の工場シリーズです。
前回は「A」刻印を取り上げましたが、今回は「V」です。
最近は、思いついたら吉日とばかりに、あまりアタマの中で整理せずに記事にしてUPしていくことにしています。
リーバイスについては気になること（調べたいこと）ばかりで、限られた時間内では（死ぬまでそんなに時間がない）、いつまで経ってもUPできなくなってしまうのではと思い始めたのです。
「写真でみるリーバイス501」シリーズもまだまだ在庫（？）が沢山あります。ただ、こちらは最終回にあげるべき「501」は既に決まっています。
「V」刻印の工場はどこなのか？
1950‐60年代の工場の表を見てみましょう。
「Valdosta」、ジョージア州のヴァルドスタでほぼ決まりのように思えます。
「Valdosta」は、1980年代には「575」を使用している工場で、フロリダ州との州境に近い米国南部の都市にあります。場所は、こちらでご確認を。
ちなみに冒頭の写真の「V」刻印は、ピケ素材の５ポケットパンツのトップボタン裏に存在しています。
赤タブは両面均等Vのリーバイスロゴ、ジッパーは「GRIPPER ZIPPER」、時代的には60年代後半以降70年代未満と思われ、1963年操業開始のヴァルドスタと矛盾は生じません。
「V」＝「Valdosta」だろうなと思いながら、相変わらず直接証拠が見つかりません。
そんな折、前回の「A」刻印の調査中、興味深いネタを見つけました。

ワタクシを最も驚かせたのは、次のセクションの内容です。
Originally established in 1963 in Valdosta under the name Oberman, the company transitioned to Levi Strauss in the early 1970s. Over the years, the facility provided employment to an estimated 1,000 to 8,000 individuals, becoming an integral part of Valdosta’s economic and social fabric. The plant closed its doors in October 1999, but the legacy of Levi Strauss continues to be cherished by the community.
同社は 1963 年にObermanという名前でバルドスタに設立され、1970 年代初頭にリーバイ・ストラウスに社名を変更しました。長年にわたり、この工場は推定 1,000 ～ 8,000 人の雇用を生み出し、バルドスタの経済と社会の基盤として不可欠な存在となりました。この工場は 1999 年 10 月に閉鎖されましたが、リーバイ・ストラウスの伝統は今も地域社会に大切に受け継がれています。

あの「Oberman」のこと？
「Valdosta」と「Oberman」の関係の調査を進めてみました。
米国租税裁判所での1967年2月8日の判例に下記の記載を認めることができました。
The petitioner is a corporation organized on July 2, 1932, under the laws of the State of Missouri. Prior to 1962 its principal place of business was Jefferson City, Mo.; since 1962 its principal place of business has been Memphis, Tenn. At all times pertinent hereto the petitioner kept its books and records and prepared its income tax returns on an accrual method of accounting and on the basis of a 52-53-week taxable year ending on the Saturday nearest to November 30. It filed its Federal income tax return for the taxable year ended December 1, 1962, with the district director of internal revenue, Nashville, Tenn.
The petitioner is engaged in the business of manufacturing men’s clothing, and maintains and operates a sales office in New York, N.Y., and six manufacturing plants located in Memphis, Tenn.; Valdosta, Ga., and the cities of Fayetteville, Harrison, Arkadelphia, and Morrillton in Arkansas.
申立人（OBERMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY）は、ミズーリ州法に基づいて 1932 年 7 月 2 日に設立された法人です。1962 年以前の主たる事業所はミズーリ州ジェファーソンシティでしたが、1962 年以降はテネシー州メンフィスです。申立人は紳士服の製造業社であり、ニューヨーク州ニューヨーク市に営業所を、テネシー州メンフィス市、ジョージア州バルドスタ市、およびアーカンソー州のフェイエットビル市、ハリソン市、アーカデルフィア市、モリルトン市に 6つの製造工場を維持・運営しています。
ちなみに1972年から1973年にかけてUniversity of California（カリフォルニア大学）Berkeley校のE.T. Grether氏が、当時のリーバイス社首脳へのインタビューをまとめた「LEVI STRAUSS & CO. : TAILORS TO THE WORLD」のレポート内にはこんな記述があります。
Was Oberman a production plant?
Yes, our main reason for taking them over was that they had some excellent production plants , and we needed production. That’s why we worked out a deal with them.
Where were they located?
All their plants were located in Arkansas, except for one in Jefferson City, Missouri, where the headquarters were. We,’ve phased out the Jefferson City plants , but the Arkansas plants have continued;
in fact they’ve been expanded since we took over.Obermanは生産工場だったのですか?
はい、彼らを買収した主な理由は、彼らには優れた生産工場がいくつかあり、私たちには生産が必要だったからです。それで私たちは彼らと契約を結びました。
彼らの工場はどこにありましたか?

実際、買収以来、工場は拡張されています。
このレポートには「Valdosta」の記述がないのですが、「Valdosta」の「Oberman」と、「O」刻印の「Oberman」が同一であることは間違いないでしょう。
そう、「Oberman」の「Valdosta」工場は、リーバイスの受託工場だった。
前記のValdosta City の公式サイトの記事では、1963年に「Oberman」がやって来たと記述してますが、初めからリーバイス製品の製造していたのでしょうか？
まだまだ分からないことが多いのですが、それはそれとして現時点での事実と推測をこうして記述しておきます。
YouTubeやInstagram、X等と違い、時代遅れのブログの良いところは、追加記述や訂正、補完が容易な点です。
今後も刻印「V」の工場を「О」（オウ）ことにしましょう。
「O」OBERMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANYの個別記事を作成していませんでしたね。そのうち作ります、そのうちね。そう、そのうち…。
